Session 2: 11.00 – 11.45

Session Title: Future Technologies of the Construction Materials Industry.

The seminar will focus on the current and future use of technology for the entire construction “eco system”; integrating the ready-mixed concrete producer, their suppliers (raw material, cement, admix, etc.), the haulers and finally the contractor. During the seminar, we will look at the current and future use of technology as it is applied to:
• The Concrete Transit Mixer (using data from the ECM, integration with cameras/video, sensors, preventive maintenance, etc.; all centered around improvements for driver   behaviour and quality of product).
• The Concrete Plant (advancements in measuring quality, temperature, plant energy, inventory levels, preventive maintenance, etc.)
• The Supplier of materials (raw materials, admixtures, cement, etc.)
• The independent or sub-contracted Hauler/transport (via mobility/BYOD or Bring Your Own Device)
• The Contractor (using technology for order placement, tracking, quality, payments, etc.)
• Results (providing transparency of business)

Hanson Ketton Cement Corporate Portraits

Speaker: Chris Tomlinson

A Technical Development Manager at Hanson Cement, with experience in cement and Regen GGBS manufacturing. He has been involved with product and customer support since the 1980s, assisting with concrete mix designs for precast and in-situ concrete. This presentation will focus upon Regen GGBS and the impact that this can have in the reduction of eCO2 in concrete, together with improvements to durability.

Session 5: 14.00 14.45

Session Title: Increasing the speed of ultrasonic pulse echo testing on site.

  • Ultrasonic pulse echo testing of concrete:
  • major applications and case studies.
  • Advantages and disadvantages.
  • Recent developments to increase the speed of testing.
  • New application areas.

DaveCorbett_hoch

Speaker: David Corbett

Product Manager for Concrete NDT Products at Proceq. Specialising in ultrasonic and rebound hammer applications. My professional activities involve – Swiss representative on CEN/TC 104/SC 1/TG 8 Member of RILEM TC 249-ISC (In situ Strength assessment of Concrete)  Member of RILEM TC 230-PSC (Performance based specification and control of concrete durability) Former member of ACI committee 228 – Non-destructive testing of concrete.

Session 6: 15.00pm – 15.45pm

Session Title: What can’t you do with concrete?

This will be taking a light hearted look at what a diverse and incredible material concrete is as well as looking at some unusual end uses for concrete, in particular small precast elements.

Speaker: Martyn Fears

Martyn Fear has worked in the precast concrete industry for over 40 years. He is currently Chairman of Specialist Precast Product, President of The Concrete Society and a member of the Institute of Concrete Technology. Martyn has worked producing high quality precast concrete products for all sectors of the industry – construction, architecture, interiors, concrete furniture and garden design as well as bespoke designed products. SPP offers the complete service from CAD design and drawings to manufacture and completion. In recent years SPP has been approached for more creative design services and bespoke high-value products such as a concrete bottle-top for a branded spirit bottle, curved washroom sinks and reception desks for high-end London office spaces. In recent years, Specialist Precast has contributed cast products to six Chelsea Gardens including gardens by Adam Frost, Chris Beardshaw and Sam Ovens.

Session 7: 16.00pm – 16.45pm

Session Title: Cement Reimagined – changing perceptions of concrete with banahCEM geopolymer technology.

Interest in the use of geopolymer binder systems as a replacement for cement in construction materials has been growing steadily over the past number of years. Much of the drive for research in this area has been the potential opportunities that these materials can offer over Portland cement, in areas such as enhanced durability of concrete structures and reduced carbon footprint. This presentation will look at the history of geopolymer binders, as well as the development and properties of banahCEM, a commercially available geopolymer cement.

 Speaker: Andrew McIntosh

Andrew McIntosh is the R&D Director of banah UK Ltd. Having initially studied biochemistry, he has spent the last 20 years within the construction industry being responsible for production, quality control, research and product development with experience of a range of cement and binder systems. Since joining banah, he has led the research and development of banahCEM and now heads up a multi-disciplinary research team as they continue to develop geopolymer solutions, providing the global construction industry with a blueprint for a climate friendly future.
